In a dramatic rescue high in the Swiss Alps, a tiny dog became an unexpected hero. A long-haired Chihuahua, white and brown, played a pivotal role in saving its owner’s life after the man fell into a glacier crevasse during a hike on the Fee Glacier in southern Switzerland. The dog’s quiet, unwavering presence on a barely visible snow-covered surface alerted rescuers to the exact location of the accident, ultimately turning a desperate situation into a miraculous escape.
According to a statement released by Air Zermatt, as reported by CBS News, the man, whose name has not been disclosed, was hiking with his Chihuahua on Friday when he unknowingly stepped onto a snow bridge and plummeted 26 feet into a deep crevasse. Trapped in the unforgiving ice, the man managed to use a basic walkie-talkie to send out a distress call. Though the signal was picked up by someone nearby, rescuers initially struggled to locate him in the vast, icy expanse.
A helicopter team was dispatched to the glacier, but despite extensive aerial searches, spotting the crevasse was proving nearly impossible. That’s when, as described by the rescue team, a rescue specialist noticed a subtle yet crucial movement—a small figure on a rock that turned out to be the Chihuahua.
The dog had not moved since the incident, remaining loyally stationed above the crevasse as if standing guard. The rescue team credited the dog's calm and observant behaviour with leading them directly to the hidden location of the man’s fall. Rescue specialists then abseiled down into the crevasse and successfully pulled the hiker to safety.
They further added that the dog’s behaviour had “contributed significantly to the successful rescue,” and dubbed the Chihuahua a “four-legged hero who may have saved his master's life.”
