Joe Biden undergoes fresh treatment after aggressive cancer spread to bones

Send Push

Former US President Joe Biden has said he is undergoing new treatment for his aggressive form of prostate cancer.

A spokesperson for the 46th President said he was having radiation therapy and hormone treatment done "as part of a treatment plan". This treatment is expected to last for five weeks as marks a new phase of his cancer treatment, the spokesperson added. The former President had already been taking a hormone medication pill and the radiation therapy was newly added to his treatment plan.

Biden announced to the public in May that he had been battling an aggressive form of prostate cancer, that had already metastasised to his bones.

Despite this, the President is said to be "doing well" amid his health battle. When his cancer battle was revealed in May, Biden's team said: "While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management."

Last month, the ex-President has a skin cancer treatment called Mohs surgery. This delicate procedure involves cutting away thin layers of skin until no trace of cancer remains. At the time, he was seen with a large bandage on his forehead.

Biden, who turns 83 next month, left office as the oldest serving President of the US- after questions were raised about his health.

The ex-President had remained largely out of the spotlight since he handed over the President to Donald Trump in January.

He thanked his supporters and well-wishers when he revealed his cancer diagnosis in May, writing: "Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support."

The former US President had a previous encounter with cancer back in February 2023. A cancerous lesion was removed from his chest during a routine medical screening. Doctors at the time described it as a common form of skin cancer.

Cancer has sadly impacted the Biden family before the President's diagnosis. His eldest son, Beau Biden, the former Attorney General of Delaware and a rising star in the Democratic Party, died in 2015 from brain cancer at the age of 46.

While Vice President, Biden created the "Cancer Moonshot" to help push research into cancer and access to treatment.

Biden and his wife Jill have remained staunch advocates for cancer research and treatment funding, often speaking about their personal loss and encouraging families facing similar battles to seek support.
