Newcastle Metro and car crash at level crossing sparking huge 999 response

A crash between a train and a car at a level crossing has prompted a huge emergency response.

The Tyne and Wear Metro train collided with the car at a level crossing in Newcastle this morning. Emergency services rushed to Callerton Lane shortly before 9.55am.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 9.55am today (Friday), we received a report of a collision involving a Metro train and a car at a level crossing on Callerton Lane in Newcastle. Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene, and nobody is believed to have sustained any serious injuries."

Service was suspended and the road was blocked while emergency crews dealt with the incident. The Tyne and Wear Metro account on X has posted the following, confirming that the disruption has now cleared: "The earlier disruption has now cleared, and Metro services have resumed between Airport and Kingston Park, although trains are behind schedule.

"We are working on restoring the timetable as quickly as possible. Ticket acceptance will continue until 12pm."
