Send Push

A second bus has hit a low bridge in Greater Manchester less than 24 hours after acrash that injured 20 people.

The accident happened in Newton Heath at around 8.30am this morning. Images from the scene appear to show a Metroline Manchester driver training bus wedged under a clearly-marked low bridge. The double decker was pictured lodged underneath, creating another headache for the stretch emergency services.

Ambulances and police officers had rushed to Eccles, Greater Manchester, after yesterday's terrifying crash which saw a passenger "ejected" from the bus when it crashed into a bridge. Greater Manchester Police said today that three people remain in hospital with a total of 20 people hurt following the accident.

Police also confirmed driver of the bus that crashed has been arrested in the aftermath of the crash, saying: "The driver of the bus – a man in his 50s – was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and has since been bailed pending further investigations."

A spokesperson added: "The top level of the bus is torn off and causes a member of the public to be ejected from the top deck of the bus." Three people – a 19-year-old female, and two men, one is his 20s and another in his 40s – sustain serious injury and remain in hospital in a stable condition. 17 other casualties are also treated at the scene for injuries that are described as non-life threatening or life-changing."

Following the latest crash today, which saw parts of the vehicle land on the ground following the collision with the bridge, trains were cancelled. "The inspection of the bridge has now been completed, and there is no damage. This means trains can now safely run over the bridge again on all lines," National Rail says.

Speaking before this morning's events, Labour MP for Worsley and Eccles Michael Wheeler said the crash on Monday was "unacceptable". He told BBC Radio Manchester: "It's not the first time this has happened, so after understanding what's happened we need to do everything we can to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester Vernon Everitt said: "We are working closely with the investigation team at Greater Manchester Police and the bus operator, Stagecoach. This is clearly a distressing situation for everyone involved and we'd like to thank emergency services for their swift response."
