Over the last few years, Kate Scott (née Abdo) has established herself as one of the most esteemed and admired sports presenters on TV. The 44-year-old will be taking centre stage on Monday (September 22) as she hosts the prestigious Ballon d'Or ceremony, a role that highlights her prominence on both sides of the Atlantic. Since 2020, she has been the face of CBS Sports' highly praised football coverage, presenting UEFA Champions League Today alongside Jamie Carragher, Thierry Henry and Micah Richards.
The programme has been likened to Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday due to its incisive analysis, infectious camaraderie and characteristic banter. Her career path has been nothing short of extraordinary. From her beginnings in Manchester, she quickly ascended through the broadcasting ranks to become one of the leading figures in sports media, with a profile that spans both the US and the UK. But who is the woman behind the microphone? Here, Express Sport delves deeper into Kate's career, personal life and off-camera stories - from her impressive net worth, to her celebrity marriage, and the much-talked-about 'spat' she had with one of her closest colleagues.
Net worthFollowing two decades in the industry, Scott has built a career that's as impressive as her estimated £2million net worth. Her professional journey began in 2005 with an internship at Deutsche Welle, Germany's international broadcaster, where she quickly made her mark.
A year later, she landed a position as production assistant for Goal, the Bundesliga magazine, before progressing to present news and sport across Deutsche Welle's English and German channels until 2009. Her growing reputation then attracted the attention of CNN, where she fronted the network's World Sports programme.
Scott's subsequent destination was Sky Sports Germany, where she became chief anchor, before transferring to the UK division. There, she fronted Sky Sports News, hosted major boxing pay-per-view events, and provided coverage of European football tournaments.
Her adaptability and appeal soon led to her being recruited by Fox Sports, who enlisted her for their 2015 Women's World Cup coverage. Shortly afterwards, she made the permanent move to the US, joining Fox as the principal presenter for its Champions League and Europa League broadcasts. When Fox relinquished the rights, Scott moved to TNT before ultimately signing with CBS Sports in 2020.
Since then, she has fronted UEFA Champions League Today alongside Premier League legends Henry, Carragher and Richards - a position that has established her as one of the leading football broadcasters on television.
Last year, Kate Scott wed former heavyweight boxer Malik Scott in an extravagant ceremony in Malibu Hills, California. Staying true to her husband's boxing heritage, the celebration included a remarkably personal touch: a bespoke wedding cake that honoured the sport he credits with "saving his life."
Malik later explained just how profoundly the gesture affected him. "Kate did something incredibly creative, caring and compassionate, reflecting the walk of life I come from," he said. The cake replicated the ring from his first ABC Gym in North Philadelphia - the venue where, as a teenager, he discovered discipline and direction.
Within the edible ring stood Malik wearing the trunks he donned against Tony Thompson, a design influenced by Sugar Ray Leonard but customised in pink and black. Next to him, Kate was portrayed in her wedding dress.
"The thoughtfulness and creativity moved me to tears," Malik remembered. "That ring meant the world to me. To see her place both of us inside it - me in my boxing gear, her in a wedding dress - was beautiful, thoughtful and loving."
Malik's boxing journey began at age 11, reaching its peak with a Junior Olympic Championship title by 17. Going professional in 2000, he amassed an outstanding 38-3-1 record throughout a career spanning 16 years, during which he faced opponents including Derek Chisora and Deontay Wilder.
Despite never securing a world title, Scott gained widespread admiration for his technical ability, devastating punch, and determination. Following his retirement, he has transitioned to coaching - particularly partnering with Wilder in 2021 - and has subsequently worked corners for major fights against Tyson Fury, Robert Helenius, Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.
Scott and Carragher maintain a solid friendship both on and off camera, but last year they found themselves in the spotlight for unfortunate reasons. During a CBS Sports live broadcast, Carragher made an ill-judged quip about Kate's loyalty to her then-fiance Malik - triggering an uncomfortable on-air moment that left both the panel and audiences cringing.
The situation occurred during coverage of Arsenal vs Porto in March 2024. At one stage, former Manchester City player Richards donned an Arsenal jersey and urged Carragher to follow suit. However, the Liverpool icon suggested Scott should put it on instead.
A devoted Manchester United supporter, she declined, declaring: "No, I'm loyal. I'm loyal." Carragher pushed further, enquiring: "To who?" to which Scott responded decisively: "Manchester United, thank you very much."
What started as playful teasing rapidly turned sour when Carragher continued with a cheeky comment about Malik. Stunned, Kate fired back: "What? Why would you even say that," whilst Carragher attempted to brush it off with laughter.
The footage quickly became viral, prompting Malik to caution he'd "show up in a physical manner" if Carragher overstepped again. However, by the following day, the atmosphere had calmed.
At the beginning of the subsequent broadcast, Kate resolved the matter with her characteristic wit. "This group, we've been together now for three-and-a-half-years is it? And I grew up with a brother and doing this show I feel like I've gained three more here," she said, before playfully characterising each of her colleagues.
Henry was "the golden child who can do no wrong," Richards the "little bro - loud but loveable," and Carragher "the middle child... chip on his shoulder, capable of saying anything for attention. Does he go too far sometimes? Absolutely. Does he apologise? Yes, he does - but all of us have that one annoying family member that we still love and accept."
Malik subsequently confirmed Carragher had made amends face-to-face: "It was not something I lost any sleep over because I noticed the way Kate handled it was very, very well, and Jamie was just being Jamie and I have no problem with him," he revealed.
"You sort it out and say sorry like gentlemen, which he did, and life moves forward. I have respect for anyone who makes an error and is big enough to apologise to the individual and the individual's partner. I harboured no bad feelings when we crossed paths.
"The comment that Jamie made hurt Kate, but they all reconciled and dealt with it together at the time. I voiced my thoughts on it, but the important thing is, we all came together and looked into each other's eyes and had brilliant food and brilliant conversations.
"I never had a strong opinion about Jamie Carragher, only about the things that he said, but meeting him, I really enjoyed the man's company. I have the utmost respect for him, as well as the rest of the panel."
Carragher subsequently confessed that he'd behaved like "a little child" and that he'd been "put back in place" by Kate. "We never ignore the elephants in the room. I was a little child," he revealed to The Ringer. "I was just getting a little smack and getting put back in place, and rightly so."
Earlier this year, Malik became part of the CBS Sports panel and grabbed the opportunity to have a playful dig at Carragher. Halfway through the programme, he revealed a hoodie bearing the names of each pundit - apart from Carragher's, which had been mischievously crossed out.
The joke had the studio in stitches, a clear indication that any remaining animosity had been firmly consigned to history. "I had that hoodie and we just put a little flare onto it for the show. It was good. People loved it," Malik subsequently revealed to Spacesport Sweden.
"They came to me asking would I hop on the last segment. I didn't have the hoodie like that but by the time I got up there I had Jamie's name crossed out and they basically asked me what I had on so I opened the shirt and I said, 'I've got to get me another one because I basically crossed Jamie's name out on that'.
"That was a little get back at him from the beginning of the story, just the comment that he said about Kate. Then as the show went on they were asking me my favourite [on the panel].
"Of course, I'm going to say my wife. The one that I married is my favourite, Kate Scott. Then I said Micah. Then Jamie said, 'Who's next?' I looked at Jamie with a face and I said, 'Don't you do it, Jamie'. And then we all had a good laugh and it was just good."
