With more than 200 dog breeds to choose from in the UK, finding the perfect pet can be a daunting task for prospective owners. Prices vary widely depending on breed popularity, size, and specific traits. And some breeds have become status symbols, commanding much higher price tags than others. Recently, the British Bulldog has taken the lead as the most expensive dog breed in the UK, with prices climbing nearly 20% in the past year.
According to recent data from Pets4Homes, an online pet marketplace, the typical asking price for a British Bulldog puppy is currently at a staggering £1,694. Known for their distinctive wrinkled face, stocky build and loyal temperament, this places them at the top of the list of the UK's most expensive dog breeds
Following closely behind are the golden retriever and boxer, with average purchase prices of £1,453 and £1,356 respectively.
Golden retrievers are among the UK's most popular breeds, with recent data showing a notable surge in popularity climbing 12 spots in just one year to rank 23rd overall, up from 35th.
Boxers, meanwhile, have seen a decline in official registrations from over 5,300 in 2011 to around 2,650 in 2023 yet they still remain popular among British dog owners.
Meanwhile, the prices of smaller breeds such as chihuahuas, French bulldogs, and miniature dachshunds have significantly decreased, with sales dropping by as much as 43%.
Axel Lagercrantz, CEO of Pets4Homes, explained that the British Bulldog's rise in popularity is due in part to changing preferences among affluent buyers.
He said: "Now, the country's affluent buyers have chosen a new status symbol: the stocky, wrinkled and unmistakably British English bulldog.
"While other flat-faced dogs are officially losing their grip on popularity - sales of pugs and French bulldogs have plummeted by a staggering 50% over the past years - the English bulldog is holding steady.
"This popularity can be explained by their affectionate, courageous, and irresistibly charming nature, making them excellent companions for families and seniors."
Interest in British Bulldog puppies has surged dramatically, with viewings increasing by 230% over the last five years and a 45% jump in just the past year.
However, if you choose to buy one, be prepared for ongoing veterinary expenses as British Bulldogs are prone to a range of health issues that can result in high long-term care costs such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions, and joint disorders.
Interestingly, British Bulldogs nearly faced extinction at one point in history. Bulldogs were originally bred for the English blood sport of bull baiting, where dogs were set against bulls in a brutal contest but this was eventually banned by the English Parliament in 1835.
Bulldog numbers plummeted, and the breed faced the risk of extinction until breeders decided to make Bulldogs into beloved family pets.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Jack Russell Terrier cross has been named the most affordable dog breed to own in the UK. According to data from the Insurance Emporium in Thorpe Underwood, the average cost to insure one of these energetic and intelligent dogs is £411.43.
