Gardeners urged to put hair in their garden this summer

Gardeners have been urged to add one odd item to their gardenthis summer. The experts at Garden Buildings Direct have revealed a surprising household item that acts as a natural fertiliser.

A spokesman said: "You might not think your used-up coffeegrounds contain much in terms of nutritional value, but they can actually provide your plants with vital antioxidants and minerals like potassium and nitrogen. Similarly, white vinegar, coconutmilk, and banana peels are all bursting with important nutrients that can help your plants grow and thrive. Surprisingly, even human and pet hair can be used thanks to its high levels of magnesium - so think twice before vacuuming up your pooch's fur!"

It may sound odd, but the experts urged gardeners to compost hair. While it can take some time to break down, hair can be a beneficial addition to your compost, especially when mixed with other materials.

"As unusual as it may sound, hair works great as a natural fertiliser due to its high levels of magnesium," said a spokesman.

"You can take some strands out of your hair brush or even use dog, cat, or horse hair.

"When used in compost, the hair can offer structural support for roots and help break up thick and clumpy soil."

Add hair in small, manageable quantities to the compost to prevent clumping and ensure proper decomposition. Thoroughly mix the hair with other compost ingredients to prevent compaction and ensure even distribution.
