The parents of four-year-old twins who are thought to have grabbed an unsecured gun and shot themselves have been arrested and are facing charges after the children were left fighting for their lives. Keishara Goodrum, 39, was arrested on two counts of child neglect with great bodily harm and Maurice Bright, 40, was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after the incident in the family's home in Florida.
Speaking to Fox News, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said that following the gunshots, the two boys were taken to Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital for treatment, where they are thought to be in a critical but stable condition. Officers were first made aware of the incident when they were called by the AdventHealth East Orlando hospital, which had begun treating the four-year-old boys for gunshot wounds.
The parents quickly took their children to the hospital, telling the police that they did not see the actual incident, but both rushed into the room when they heard the loud bang go off.
The children's mother, Goodrum, claims she was making breakfast for the twins and her three other children, while Bright was outside cooking on the grill, when they heard the shots.
According to the arrest statement, Goodrum told officers that she may have left the gun out unsecured on their sofa after forgetting to lock it up after drinking the night before.
